I rode quite well to finish 13th considering my form and the toughness of the circuit. The circuit is hard with a solid 1km climb at the start and then undulating roads for the next 10km. Unfortunately, I don’t think a long breakaway with my form on the tough national road circuit this year would be the best illustration of this bike’s potential…but that will come. I worked hard to stay with the group and maintain position with the rough roads of the circuit taking their toll on me and my bike. Another crash on the circuit had the ambulance taking up half of the road after the fastest of the corners for most of the race.

A break of ten got away on the Williamstown circuit so that the rest of the field had little to Australian sports news do, with an effective marshalling role played by Kate Bates to protect her team mate up the road. I’m not so worried about having warmed up on the circuits like I always wanted to do a few years ago. When it comes down to it, I love the racing, the possibility , how ever remote at times!, of winning something that will satisfy the competitive drive inside. The list of gravel championships continues to grow with the popularity of the discipline now well entrenched and cycling federations across the globe deciding the top riders from the nation need to be recognised. The gap between the two leading groups hovered at 20 seconds, but the chasers could not close it thanks to the close cooperation of the four front riders. But the style of the race was markedly different, with the men riding hard from the gun in order to make the race as selective as possible early on.

According to Howson (the Nationals present an excellent chance for every state to witness Australia’s top riders congregating), so distributing this event across the country is likely beneficial and adds excitement to the racing. Buninyong holds a unique charm, especially with the Nationals taking place there. The course at Mount Buninyong appeals to various riders, as it isn’t designed for only one specific type. The expenses involved in these competitions are significant, and the caliber of both the races and the Championships has risen considerably compared to previous years. This setup offers greater variety and opportunities for various riders to compete for the Championships.
A new section has been introduced to guide racers through Nannup (offering numerous prime viewing spots before the race returns to the start/finish line), where the champions of the rainbow jerseys will be determined. The enjoyment and experience of spectators were crucial factors, prompting us to rethink how attendees could access and watch the riders while actively engaging in the event. I lack familiarity with these types of mistakes, so any attempts to address them would be greatly appreciated.

In the GC picture (there was little change as stage 1 winner Baudin defended his lead for another day), but that is set to change as the race ramps up in difficulty over the next few days and into the weekend. As soon as the sprint started (it looked like it would be between Simmons and Fisher-Black), and there was little between the two at the line, but the long effort from Simmons just edged out to earn him his first victory of 2026. Even though two out of the remaining nine riders were from his team and made no effort in the chase (Mann admitted afterwards he didn’t intend to go so far out), but once he committed himself, he wasn’t turning back.

Vine agrees this kind of standout success can only be beneficial — but he argues that it’s a long-term fix for something that is already hitting the red alert zone in a much closer time frame.
“I was right behind them and someone just squeezed one of the riders (he went down), everyone hit him, I just managed to swerve around the outside,” Silver Medallist Joel Lewis recalled of the accident which almost claimed him too. With 500 metres to go, however there was drama a-plenty as the peloton, backed by the breeze and travelling at 50km/hour on a straight flat section into the finish, became a tangled mess. As he puts it, “I’d also swing it the other way in that the reward’s a lot better as well, right? I mean, there’s not much money in cycling, but the money in cycling has gone up.
